Silver Quill Winner with regional chairs

Hi Everyone,

I enjoyed seeing many of you in Kansas City last week for our IABC 2019 #connect2comms conference in which we partnered with the Pacific Plains Region. We had a great program and some good speakers. I would like to thank our conference committee members, led by Mary Francis (2017-2018 Southern Region chair), for all of their hard work. We have already started planning for next year’s conference, so watch this space for updates.

I also want to thank the many chapter leaders from around our region who took part in our Leadership Summit on the day before the conference. I learned a lot about you, your struggles and successes, and the ways in which the region and headquarters can support you. I look forward to continuing this conversation with you in the coming months as our board works to close the gap between the region and the chapters we serve.

On a slightly different note, I want to plug IABC Member Month. New and renewing members can save 10 percent on international dues in October by using the discount code OCTOBER10. Even if your membership is not due for renewal this month, you can still email Member Relations and ask to renew in October so you can take advantage of the promotion. I encourage all of you to do so.

Finally, I think I would be remiss if I did not at least briefly mention the recent IABC staff changes. Like many membership organizations in recent years, IABC is undergoing a bit of self-evaluation—if you will—as it redefines and better defines its place in the evolving communications landscape.

As a longtime (almost 20 years) IABC member and university communications instructor, I truly believe that our association has a role to play and that we are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the shifts happening in our industry. I know IABC’s International Executive Board and staff are working hard to gather research and start the process for determining what the association will look like over the next five years or so, and I’m excited to see the direction this takes.

I wish you all a great month and hope you can take advantage as this cool, fall weather finally makes it down to our region of the country.

Mark Evans
2019-2020 IABC Southern Region Chair
