Wilma Mathews, ABC, IABC Fellow | 2014
Wilma Mathews, ABC, IABC Fellow, has served as chair of the IABC Ethics Committee and Accreditation Council, and twice was a member of the IABC International Executive Board (IEB). She is a Gold Quill winner for media relations and writing. She is a member of the Rowan University PR Hall of Fame. She has spoken before numerous professional, civic, government and academic audiences in the U.S., Canada, England, Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, China, Malaysia and Australia.
Matthews is co-author of On Deadline: Managing Media Relations (1st–5th editions), author of Effective Media Relations: A Practical Guide for Communicators, principal contributor to How to Get Results with Publicity and author of How to Create a Media Relations Program. She has published dozens of articles in communication and business media.
She has worked with hundreds of executives on improving their relationships with the media and refining their presentation styles with audiences from employees to analysts, and conducts media relations and communications management seminars and counsels organizations on strategic and media relations planning.
Matthews served as Director of Constituent Relations at Arizona State University and Faculty Associate at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication at ASU. “Teaching is what I do best and love the most,” Wilma says. She has taught students and professional communicators for more than 30 years on many aspects of communication including media relations, writing, editing and planning. Noted for her practical approach to these topics, she receives the highest ratings from the seniors and graduate students who take her class at ASU.
Wilma is an avid mystery, biography and history reader. She enjoys travel and is the consummate tourist, tramping through zoos and old houses with equal aplomb. Among her greatest adventures is being attacked by a one-armed gibbon at an elephant camp in Thailand.

John G. Clemons, MS, ABC, APR, IABC Fellow | 2016
John G. Clemons is a senior communication leader, internal communications advisor and solutionist, writer and speaker. He was most recently Director of Global Employee Communications for Newell Brands.
He has held senior management roles for Walmart in culture, diversity and inclusion, global ethics and compliance, and global internal communications. His responsibilities included the creation, implementation and measurement of key communication initiatives including executive speechwriting, video programs, branding, employee resource group programming support and communications, and strategic internal and external communication and engagement programs and initiatives. Less than two years after joining Walmart, he received two IABC Southern Region Silver Quill Awards of Excellence for his work in internal communications and employee engagement.
Clemons served 10 years as a director of global communications at Raytheon Company. His global communication functions included executive counsel and messaging, organizational communication, internal branding, human resources and marketing communications support, Intranet content development and management, special events, community relations, international industry show management, PR/media relations and public affairs. His work for Raytheon received awards from both IABC and PRSA.
He founded Clemons Communication, a strategic communication consulting company. Prior to the launch of his consultancy, John was the vice president of internal communications for Nextel Communications, Inc., director of internal communications for Ameritech, and vice president of internal communications for Marriott.
As vice president for communications at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a public policy research institution in Washington D.C., John led a team in editing and producing several books, white papers, newsletters and annual reports, plus directed all PR/media relations, internal communications and public information services.
He received his BS degree in news journalism and MS in communication management from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He began his career as a general assignment reporter for The Star-Ledger newspaper in New Jersey and associate editor for Black Enterprise business magazine.
Clemons has been an active IABC member for more than 25 years, holding such leadership roles as interim executive director, International Executive Board (IEB) chair and chief volunteer officer, IEB and IABC Foundation Board member for six years, Multiculturalism Committee member, and local chapter officer. Most recently he served as the chair of the association’s Editorial Committee, leading a team of global volunteers in the review and enhancement of IABC’s editorial content and processes.
