IABC Chapter spotlight brings focus on Nashville
In this first installment of a series which focuses on individual chapters of IABC and what makes them unique and successful, we talk with Mollye Dietrich, chapter vice president, HCA Healthcare about IABC Nashville.
Nashville chapter blends music city with diversity, acceptance
IABC Southern Region: Tell us about the communications industry and how its changing in the area. What types of communications jobs might one find there?
Dietrich: I think the most unique part about being a communicator in Nashville is that you have so much opportunity at your feet, and it’s not stopping any time soon. Nashville is growing like crazy, as you have probably seen in the news or for yourself if you have visited in the past five years.
There is job security in the healthcare and music industries here for sure. But there are also large, new corporations opening offices in Nashville like Amazon, Oracle, iHeartMedia, AllianceBernstein, and Asurion, to name a few. I just recently heard that Meta (previously Facebook) is also looking into expanding into the Nashville area as well. There are so many unique communications and marketing roles to be filled within these companies, so the job market is not slowing down here.
As Nashville is a huge healthcare pub, we naturally have lots of representation from large healthcare companies such as HCA Healthcare, Cigna, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Healthcare Bluebook, HealthStream, and Brookdale Senior Living, to name a few.
But we also have members from communication and PR firms, law firms, creative and marketing agencies, tourism and hospitality, large retail companies like Dollar General and Cracker Barrel, insurance, technology and software development, as well as our surrounding universities (Vanderbilt, Belmont, Lipscomb, Tennessee State University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Western Kentucky University).
Of course, we would also be remiss without some representation from the music industry, as we are “Music City” after all! In fact, one of our members has worked at a Christian broadcasting radio station for years which is cool.
IABC Southern Region: With so much activity and growth, how does your chapter stand out and continue to attract and retain members?
Dietrich: What I love most about our Nashville chapter board is our diverse team who are nothing less than go-getters. We have representation from each generation, from Gen Z to Baby Boomers, and that is the beauty of how we collaborate — and always have. We have young, fresh faces with lots of new ideas, and we also have folks who have been dedicated to the chapter for years and have a wealth of knowledge to share. The mix of the two is a perfect combination to get things done efficiently, which is exactly what our board does.
We are also an extremely inclusive chapter and have a fantastic relationship with our Nashville LGBTQ+ Chamber as well. Everyone is welcome, and we are known for our “southern” hospitality. You will never attend one of our events and walk away feeling left out or unengaged.
We take pride in getting to know each person as an individual and welcome them to our family. That’s one of the things I noticed right away when I joined years ago. One of my favorite things about the chapter is how we help each other out when it’s needed – whether it be looking for a new job, going through a hard time personally, or just looking for a friend to go do something fun with. There is always someone that is willing to lend a hand!
IABC Southern Region: Most of us know Nashville for its deep history with country music. As a Nashville native, tell us more about what it’s like to live there.
Dietrich: I think Nashville is a great spot to make a career change – we are still considered a “smaller” city, but some areas feel like a big city as well without all the hustle and bustle of somewhere like New York City. Not only do we have lots of bigger companies planting roots here now, but we also have amazing restaurants, nearby lakes, rivers, and hiking, shopping, art, and not to mention live music on literally every corner. Beware of the bachelorette parties, however – they have pretty much taken over the downtown scene!
In all seriousness, I would advise that anyone thinking about relocating to reach out to our board via our website, email or social media, and we can absolutely get you involved with our chapter right away. That way, you can get a head start on meeting people in the industry and start networking even before you move. On a personal level, I love meeting new people and social activities (I am an Enneagram 7), so I would be more than happy to have a conversation regarding relocating, answer any questions you may have, or perhaps set up a coffee or happy hour meeting for when you arrive!
